The state government led by ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), today allowed the mandatory Friday congregation prayers at historic Jamia Masjid, Srinagar after eight weeks.
All the gates of the historic Masjid that remained locked for the past eight weeks were allowed to open by the state government today.
Jamia Masjid is the traditional stronghold of Mirwaiz Family of Kashmir and the Friday sermons are delivered by the present Mirwaiz (head priest) Molvi Umar Farooq.
The Jamia Market was also open and shopkeepers were allowed to do the normal business after eight weeks.
Meanwhile, Clashes erupted between government forces and youth after Friday prayers at Nowhatta area of Srinagar.
After the culmination of congregational Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of the city, young boys took to the streets to protest against the civilian killings in Kashmir.
They were chanting anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
However, a heavy contingent of police and paramilitary forces deployed there intercepted the youth, triggering clashes.
Forces fired several rounds of tear-gas canisters to disperse the protesting youth.
